Volkswagen Passat named Used Car of the Year by What Car?
Volkswagen has been honoured with two class victories and the Passat has been named overall Used Car of the Year by What Car? magazine.
The What Car? Used Car of the Year judging panel was made up of experts from all areas of the motor industry including car dealerships, auction houses and experts from What Car?
The 2005 five door Golf GTI claimed victory in the highly competitive Sports Car category, while the 2006 Passat 1.9-litre TDI S claimed victory in the Family Car category as well as the overall title of Used Car of the Year.
The Passat impressed the judges with its mix of value for money, reliability, driver involvement and high levels of comfort and safety features.
The Golf GTI was considered to be all things to all men; blending the practicality of a five seat hatchback with performance from the 2.0-litre 200 PS engine and high levels of equipment.
In addition to these category victories, a further six Volkswagen models were also shortlisted in their respective categories. The Polo BlueMotion 1.4-litre TDI (Green Car), Golf 1.6-litre FSI (Small Family Car), Touran 1.9-litre TDI SE (MPV), Passat Estate 1.9-litre TDI S (Estate), Touareg 2.5-litre TDI (SUV) and Phaeton 3.2-litre V6 (Executive) were all placed in the top five.
John French, National Used Car Manager for Volkswagen UK commented: ‘We are extremely proud to receive these awards from What Car? magazine. To win two categories and the overall title in such a competitive marketplace is fantastic and will be a real boost to our Retailer network.’
French continued: ‘It is also great to see so many other Volkswagen models included in the category shortlists. It is a real credit to Volkswagen’s consistent focus on build quality and reliability that we have so many models represented and they are perform so strongly.’
It’s not only the products which make Volkswagen a good used buy. Volkswagen also offers the Approved Used Programme, which allows customers to buy with complete peace of mind. All cars are sold with a multipoint check, history checks, up to 12 month’s warranty and breakdown assistance and a 30 day exchange plan.

Volkswagen Triumphs at Towcar Awards with New Golf
Volkswagen has won the top prize at The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year Awards, with the sixth-generation Golf, which went on sale in January this year, claiming the £16,000-£20,000 price category as well as the prestigious title of Caravan Club Towcar of the Year 2010.
The winning model, the Golf SE 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS, particularly impressed the 10 judges with strong performances when towing in a variety of situations, practicality as a caravanning family car and high quality cabin.
The 28 cars tested in this year’s competition were put through their paces at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire for their towing ability, acceleration, braking, ability to cope with demanding hill starts and an assessment of usability in terms of everyday caravanning.
Explaining the judges’ decision to award the Golf the top accolade, driving judge Barry Williams commented: ‘Absolutely faultless stability made the Golf steadfast on the test track and when the punchy engine had whisked its way to 60 mph it was still ready to accelerate, even in sixth gear. Agile handling enables the car to tackle the most demanding route. The Volkswagen Golf SE 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS is a truly capable towing vehicle and a worthy winner.’
Williams continued: ‘The Golf is now in its sixth generation and remains Europe’s best car. It’s not difficult to see why as soon as you sit inside. The Golf has always had a reputation for good build quality and attention to detail but, after 26 millions sales and over 34 years, the company has produced a car that is the quietest and safest yet.’
The awards were presented at a ceremony in London, and the trophy was collected by Chris Craft, Director of Volkswagen UK.
On receiving the trophy, Craft said: ‘We’re delighted to accept this award from The Caravan Club. Since launch, the Golf has received a number of accolades, but this one is particularly important. More than one million drivers in the UK use their cars for towing and the Golf is the best-selling Volkswagen here. It is therefore obvious that the Caravan Club’s expert judges have provided us with a fantastic commercial opportunity and we intend to make the most of it.’

Volkswagen Honoured in BusinessCar Techies 2009
Volkswagen’s latest security system has been honoured at this year’s BusinessCar Techies Awards with the advanced electronic Intelligent Key being named Best Security Device.
A new standard feature on all Volkswagen Touareg 4x4 and Phaeton models, the key maintains a record of whether the car has been locked and alarmed. By simply pressing a button on the key and looking at the red light indicator, an owner can check, even when they are not with the car, the ‘locked’ status of their vehicle. It can also provide vital evidence to insurers and fleet managers as they can confirm by interrogating the car key’s data chip whether the vehicle was secured before any theft or break-ins occurred.
Tristan Young, Editor-in-Chief of BusinessCar commented: ‘Unlike almost all of the other categories where we knew who the likely entries would be, the Best Security Device Techie was won by a device BusinessCar has never written about before. The Volkswagen Intelligent Key is simple to use, useful and clever, which is just what the BusinessCar Technies are about.’
In addition, the highly efficient new Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion was highly commended in the Best Green Development (manufacturer) category. On sale next year, it is expected to return 85 mpg and produce just 87 g/km of CO2, which matches or exceeds the capabilities of hybrid vehicles currently on sale, and yet is conventional to drive and maintain.
On receiving the award, Vincent Kinner, Head of Volkswagen Fleet Services commented: ‘We are extremely proud to receive this Techie award for the Intelligent Key from BusinessCar, particularly as it was voted for solely by the publication’s readership, which is such an influential group within the fleet arena. The commendation for the Polo BlueMotion is also a fantastic result prior to the vehicle’s market entry next year.’
